Match Report – Steep II CC v Salthill CC

A wonderful setting and great weather for a good afternoons cricket high in the South Downs and the game did not disappoint. Steep II won the toss and elected to bat first in the baking sunshine on a perfect batting strip and got off to a flying start scoring 46 in the first 5 overs thanks to some electrifying batting by M.Burkie. Salthill’s bowlers kept preserving and Burkie finally fell for 64 in the 9th over edging R.Daultry to deep gully with a well taken catch from P.Elsbury. Salthill tightened up the bowling from this point, with J. Holder and S. King holding up an end each, and Steep struggled to keep their fast paced start on track but wickets were still at a premium. Drinks came and went and in the 23rd over S. Wilson got his reward for some tight bowling with an lbw to bring it to 121-2. Steep continued to pick up runs and some fine bowling by R. Fisk picked up 2 more wickets, a few more wickets fell and steep finished there 42 overs at 239-7.

Salthill’s batting got off to a solid start, chasing 240 to win, with A. Wallsgrove scoring a quick 24 before being caught at mid-on. P. Elsbury also opened the batting for Salthill and made his way to a commanding 52 before falling just before drinks. J. Holder and N. Bishop took to the wicket to put on Salthill’s next 89 runs with an impressive 3rd wicket partnership with Holder looking solid whilst Bishop got on top and dominated the bowling . With Salthill on 180-3, after Holder was removed for 31, with 8 overs to go, 60 runs looked a tall order but G. Hibbert came in to score a quick 20 from 11 balls. Bishop fell for 80 in the 39th before captain S. Richardson came in to finish of the game with Hibbert with the winning runs scored in the 40th over. An impressive win for Salthill with good displays from bat and ball and an incredible game of cricket all round.
