Cricket Match Report – Salthill CC Vs Denmead CC

An overcast afternoon in Fishbourne started with Salthill winning the toss and putting Denmead into bat. A. Court and J. Heather opened the bowling for Salthill and continuously put pressure on Denmead with  runs being at a premium and Court picking up two wickets . Denmead made it to drinks at 50 for 2 after 21 overs.  Salthill let the pressure slip after the break with Denmead scoring at a fast rate with 163 runs in the remaining 21 overs with only S. King picking up wickets with 3 for 52 off 8 overs. Denmead ended their innings at 213-6.

A winning total of 214 looked like a tall order for Salthill but A. Wallsgrove and A. Court started off well, scoring freely and swiftly moving Salthill along to 43 off of 10 overs before Court was bowled out for 26. Wallsgrove moved onto 28 before being caught out and after this wickets fell regularly with only S. Richardson and R.Fisk scoring in the double figures from the middle order leaving Salthill at 142-7. L.Carter, who was the last of the batsmen at the crease and scoring quick run, was joined by S. Wilson with 17 overs left to try and win the game from an unlikely position. Carter continued to aggressively hit boundaries with Wilson holding up the other end and the runs required quickly diminished. The winning runs came for Salthill in the 34th over with Carter guiding a ball through gully for 2, finishing on 71 Not Out. A good win for Salthill CC after finding themselves in an unlikely position and the win also takes them on to 3 wins on the bounce with a trip to Servicemaster CC next weekend.

Young Bosham Sailors Competing in European Championships

Two young Bosham sailors are competing in the Magic Marine Optimist European Championships 2015, in Pwllheli, North Wales.

Arthur Fry and Cossie Lewis, 14 and 13 years old respectively, have been chosen for the eight-strong British team after impressing in the selection trials at the 2012 Olympic sailing venue at Weymouth and Portland.

The Optimist junior sailing class is thought to be the springboard to future sailing success, with four-time Olympic champion Ben Ainslie being a former Optimist sailor.

Good luck to the team!

Bosham Football Club News

Bosham celebrate winning the Division 3 Challenge Cup.

Bosham Football Club ended their first season back in the Sussex County League on high, by seeing off local rivals Sidlesham to claim the Division 3 Cup on a memorable evening at Pagham’s Nyetimber Lane ground.
A healthy crowd of 349 witnessed the Robins win the cup for a third time, with leading goal scorer for the season, Dave Storey, getting his side off to the perfect start – his 18th of the campaign. Nick Edgington then doubled Bosham’s advantage to put Andy Probee’s side a commanding position going into the half-time break, before Matt Docherty added gloss to the result in the closing stages with a fantastic strike to ensure the silverware headed back to Walton Lane.

FA Charter Standard club

The cup victory also gave Bosham reason to cheer after their Division 3 title ambitions faded in the closing weeks having lead the table for much of the campaign. Despite losing key players in Kieran Hartley and Graeme Dowden to Chichester City at the end of the year, the team comfortably finished in the top four following promotion only last season, and are sure to give the 16-team re-branded Southern Combination a real go in 2015/16.

Frank Antony’s reserves finished their season with a 1-1 draw at Rustington in the West Division, with Josh Williams on the score sheet with a superb effort into the top corner. The reserves made a significant jump up from the West Sussex League Division 4, but have done well to adjust to the improved standard after a difficult start. They continue to work in tandem with both the first and youth teams and play a vital role in the structure of the club.
Off the field it’s been another of success, with the Sport England improvement works carried out last summer to the clubhouse helping increase the club profile, with Portsmouth Ambassador, Alan Knight officially re-opening the building in August. This lead to a charity and club fundraiser in November taking place involving the ‘Pompey Legends’ which was well supported despite the forecast. The make-over of the clubhouse gave us the necessary standard not only for the League, but to assist with our longer term sustainability.
Our links with Portsmouth also assisted with the end of season presentation, with former striker Ray Crawford – one of the most prolific goal scorers of his generation – our guest of honour, accompanied by a replica of the FA Cup for attendees to enjoy. More on that next month!
We also successfully renewed our FA Charter Standard status to now incorporate our youth team – a kit mark in recognition of being a well-run organisation, providing organised coaching in a safe environment.

The award winning Bosham programme

This status was also acknowledged at the Sussex Sport Awards, with Chairman Alan Price the recipient on the club’s behalf at a black-tie event in Brighton.
The club is proud to have given many youngsters the opportunity to not only participate, but progress into the senior set-up over the years, with our under 16’s – under the guidance of John Stead – looking to continue that trend. A second side at under 15 level will take to the field in 2015/16 to further strengthen our youth section – in part supported through our Football Foundation grant gained last season. If you are interested in joining the under 15’s next season, please get in touch with manager, Rick Kennett: 07749 865070.
Kick-backs from our FA Charter Standard status include free kit and footballs, in addition to receiving complimentary tickets to see the first England women’s game at Wembley Stadium – an inspiring occasion enjoyed by our under 16’s – many of whom had never been to our national stadium before.
The playing surface at Walton Lane has again been maintained to a high standard this season on finite resource, with Andy Probee – and Rhys Hughes from Mulberry Contractors – receiving deserved recognition via a visit from Southampton FC’s Head Groundsman, Andy Gray, as part of the Sussex FA Groundsman of the Year Awards.
The club’s website – – rubbed shoulders with clubs from higher up the pyramid in being ranked No 1 in the Pitchero network, while our presence on social media has grown significantly as we close in on 1,000 followers on Twitter (@BoshamFC). Our match day programme is again set to feature prominently at the Soccer Club Swap Shop programme awards – last season we received a ‘merit’ and were ranked 43rd nationally.
We are also looking to work in partnership with the Parish Council to assist their application for provision of a defibrillator to be sited at the adjacent Village Hall, which can be accessed by all users of the recreation ground.Alan-Knight-Door-Aug30

Bosham Cricket Club bowled over by £10,000 community support

Bosham Cricket Club has received a £10,000 donation from The Southern
Co-operative following the success of the retailer’s community support
scheme run at its Bosham stores over the past year.

Launched last October with a free community party, the Bosham community
support scheme to donate up to £10,000 to Bosham Cricket Club ran jointly
at its Bosham stores in Delling Lane and Station Road. The scheme is a way
for local charities and good causes to raise funds with the backing of
customers, but without costing shoppers a penny to support. The recipients
are chosen by members of The Southern Co-operative who shop and work at the
participating store to ensure that the funding directly benefits the local

John Strudwick, Bosham Cricket Club Captain, said: “Cricket has been played
in the village for over 100 years and is an important part of village life.
The club is open to all residents and friends of Bosham and its
neighbouring villages. We’re really grateful to The Southern Co-operative
for this £10,000 donation and appreciate the effort from the Bosham
community to support the scheme. We’ll use this to finance the preparation
and maintenance of the cricket square and outfield, plus we also need
changing rooms to comply with league regulations. This is an on-going
project which is the next step into creating a local sports club open to
all ages, playing at good levels, in beautiful surroundings.”

The Southern Co-operative’s Retail Business Manager in Bosham, Paul
Chatfield, said: “Bosham village is a very close community and support for
our store’s fundraising and community initiatives is always very strong,
as demonstrated by the success of this scheme. I know the cricket club
really appreciates all the support from our customers and have said they
would like to come into the store to help customers pack their shopping
bags by way of a thank you to show their appreciation.”

Herklots take EIGHT as Salthill fail to deliver.

Salthill travelled to Eastleigh to play lowly placed Trojans III for their final league match of the season.

Salthill took to the field and started off well restricting Trojans to 35 runs with 5 wickets down in the first 13 overs. However, Trojans began to fight back and the Salthill bowlers could not finish the team off and they doggedly fought on to achieve a well deserved 112 off 35 overs with Gor (13*) and Broomfield (12) offering a tail end resistance. Steve King 3-20 was the pick of the Salthill bowlers.

A lethargic batting performance from Salthill following the tea break enabled Trojans to be victorious with only opener Rob Johnson determined to fight to top score 23. Adrian Elsbury provided some resistance towards the end of the Salthill innings with a four and six in his 12 runs. Herklots took 8-21 to give Trojans young side a worthy victory. Salthill all out for 73.

A mid table finish with much promise for next season….

Salthill v Friends Match Report

Salthill hosted Friends as the season starts to draw to a conclusion. Skipper Wallsgrove won the toss and chose to bat. He was out early but a strong partnership from Richardson and Court (35) helped Salthill along nicely. Court then fell courtesy of stunning catch from Perusi. Bishop pushed Salthill towards a decent target, before falling one shy of his half century. Salthill eventually making 188 all out. In the field Salthill started slowly, and early dropped catches didn’t help that as Perusi and Mutiti cleared the ball to all boundaries. When the pace came off, Holder did the damage as he picked up 4-25 off his 10. This was not enough to get Mutiti out as he finished on 96* the star man in Friends’ 5 wicket win.

Bosham Football Club

Bosham Football Club are delighted to announce The Woodmancote Pub as our main club sponsor for the 2014/15 season.

The Woodmancote is locally recognised for its friendly welcome; simple, fresh and well prepared food, outstanding service and located in an idyllic village setting, just a short drive from Bosham.

Our new club sponsors logo will proudly feature on the Robins’ first team home and away shirts this season, who wore the kit for the first time on August 23, when Andy Probee began their season with a visit to Ferring.

Like Bosham’s recent clubhouse refurbishment through Sport England funding, The Woodmancote Pub also underwent a stylish re-fit when current owners, Jim Paget and John Miller purchased the pub in May 2012 – and have gone from strength to strength.

Woodmancote Pub Manager, Terry Collins said: “We were looking to get more involved with local community and sporting projects, and like ourselves, have seen that Bosham Football Club are growing and on-the-up.

“We know a few of the players who use the pub, and I played under the late Dennis Probee at Gosport in the Hampshire Youth League as a 15-year-old, so there’s a previous affinity that made for a good fit all round.

“We’re pleased to be able to help the club, and will look to give them as much support as we can in making for a successful season ahead”.

Bosham’s Commercial Manager, Simon Jasinski, added: “We are delighted to have the backing of the Woodmancote Pub as our headline club sponsor for our first season back in the Sussex County League.

“It’s an exciting time for us, and believe that in the Woodmancote, we have a partner who has similar values to ourselves in regards to progress and success – and are extremely grateful to Jim, John and Terry for their support.
